New York Fashion Week Backstage Beauty Fall 2012

New York fashion week is well known in the insider circle as a more ‘subdued’ beauty experience. That said, there were quite a few noticeable trends popping up at more than one show during the week.

Red Lips

Hello seductress… well, actually, the red lips I saw were more ‘sweet’ than ‘va va voom’ and came in a range of hues. Over at Charlotte Ronson a red-orange lip was created, using a coating of Sephora Collection Lip Attitude Glamour Lipstick in Red Flirt and Rosy Frivol to compliment the models’ eye wash of lavendar.

Make up artist Dick Page created a strong ‘poster paint type’ lip with a matte finish over at Marc by Marc Jacobs by using a tomato red Shiseido lipstick base. “This is the base of lipstick, before the pearls and mattes and other finishing items are put into it,” he said. “You wouldn’t want to wear it in real life because it’s quite waxy and horrible, but it looks great on the runway.”

Red lips were also the choice of colour for Monique Lhuiller, Zac Posen and Thakoon, proving that glamour still exudes on the runway.

Strong, elongated eyebrows were the focus backstage at Vera Wang where Clé de Peau’s Eyebrow Pencil and Eye Liner Pencil were used to create a strong, bold look, which was the same story over at Marc Jacobs where thick, dark eyebrows accented heavily penciled eyes.

Side Swept

Probably the most noticeable trend of fashion week was the side part teamed with frizzy manes, twisted buns or low ponytails at the nape of the neck. The hair style showed up on the runways of DKNY, Calvin Klein, Diane von Furstenberg, BCBG Max Azria, Michael Kors and Nanette Lepore.

The key to this ultra sleek look is to use a blow dry spray before flat-ironing the hair and combing over from a deep side part. If you prefer to use a gel, Phyto Professional Wet Gel does the best job. To tame fly aways without making your hair looking as though it’s been plastered onto your head, spray a makeup brush with hair spray and brush down and away from the face.
