Knotty Hair

I’m really digging knotty hair at the moment… and no, I don’t mean the kind you get when you don’t brush your hair for days on end.

This style is such a simple, but interesting way to do your hair and takes all of 2 minutes. So here’s how to knot your hair the right way.

Brush your hair into the part you want to have (I tend to go for a side part, but sometimes I just brush it all back).

Separate your hair into two sections and twist each section away from the scalp (so you’ll be turning the left hand side anti-clockwise and the right hand side clockwise). This is really important because the two sections of hair need to be heading in the opposite direction, so that there is more distinction between them when you knot your hair.

Once each section is twisted, simply knot the hair until you can’t knot any more. With each knot, make sure you aim to knot on top of the last one. It looks more flattering to have the end result sitting high up on your head, rather than sagging past the nape of your neck.

Tuck the rest of the hair that you weren’t able to form a knot with, in behind the knot and pin with bobby pins.

The Faux Bob

Everybody’s doin’ it….

I’m talking about the faux bob. Have you ever wanted to step out with shorter hair but didn’t necessarily want to chop off your luscious locks? Well then get into the spirit of the faux bob. It was all the rage at Oscar de la Renta, Jil Sander and Rodarte’s Spring Summer collections and Christian Dior’s Spring Couture. It’s been spotted on celebrities from Kate Beckinsale, to  Vanessa Hudgens, Leighton Meester and Eva Mendes. So here’s how to get the hottest look this season.

Firstly, divide your hair into top and bottom half sections at the level of your ear.

Pin the top section of your hair up and didvide the bottom section of your hair into two.

Create two braids and pin them so they lie flat on your head.

Release the top half of your hair and spritz with Bumble and Bumble’s Does It All Styling Spray, this will give allow you to munipulate your hair as well as provide a good amount of grip.

Once you have styled your hair, whether you decide to have waves, curls or keep it dead straight, tie into a loose ponytail at the nape of your neck with a clear hair elastic.

Tuck your ponytail and the hair elastic underneath and pin it to the braids using bobby pins.

Perfect Puckers

When ever Winter pokes it’s dreary head around the corner, my lips suffer and there’s nothing I hate more than a less than perfect pout. Luckily, working in the beauty department means I get to observe some of the best makeup artists in the bizz doing their thing on photo shoots. Here are a few tips and tricks of the trade for smooth and full looking lips. You will need a toothbrush, lip brush, lip balm, lip pencil and highlighting creme.

Step one – exfoliate. Yes. Lips are just like your body and really benefit from a little scrub every day. Exfoliating not only removes all the dead skin cells, it also promotes blood circulation, so you’ll be sure to notice beautiful red lips within days. Moving in small circular motions, polish your lips with a dry, soft toothbrush every night before bed. Lush (£4.95 do a great ‘Bubblegum Lip Scrub’ for extra silky soft smackers.

Step two – Moisturize with a lip balm every morning for protection against harsh weather and every night before bed for intensive treatment. I’m currently loving Bach’s Rescue Balm (£5.89 and Burt’s Bees Beeswax Lip Balm Tube (£3.69 because they tend to work better than most chapsticks.

Step three – Using a lip pencil (Kjaer Weis – and a highlighting creme (MAC’s Bare Study Paint Pot £13.50 highlight your philtral columns, the ridges in between your upperlip and nose, and blend. White pencil works well too.

Step four – Outline and fill your lips with your chosen shade. Darker shades will make your lips look smaller, so opt for a natural colour. Slightly extend your natural lip line, by drawing on the outter edge and fill in any areas necessary for a symmetrical look.

Step five – Highlight your cupid’s bow to define the shape of your lips. This is what EVERY makeup artist does for a flawless look, but make sure you don’t go on to your vermillon border.

Step six – Dab some highlighter in the middle of your bottom lip. The reflective particles focus the light to give you the ultimate Angelina Jolie pout.

Step seven – Finally apply an all over clear lip gloss and air kiss till the sun don’t shine!

Wet Wet Wet

I often slick back my hair for a glamorous yet masculine look, so I was quite happy to see that I was on ‘trend’ as far as the autumn/winter runways were concerned. Firstly it needs to be said… there is a big difference between your hair looking wet and your hair looking dirty! The key is to put enough product in your hair to look damp all the way down to mid length and leave the ends dry and clean, like your hair would naturally look as it dried.

Backstage at Paris Fashion Week Redken’s Hardwear 16 was all the rage and Just-Out-Of-The-Shower Hair Gel by Khiel’s works a treat, but I used Bumble & Bumble’s gellac because once it’s in, it’s in. There’s no brushing it out, it literally freezes shapes with a glistening finish, so your hair looks wet all day long.

Not only is it super easy to maintain it’s also versatile. Try flicking it to the side, putting it into a bun (messy or tamed) or slick straight back.
